The focus of our company is on automation and digitization. In close cooperation with our customers, we develop and implement both automated individual machines and complete production systems for the natural stone, artificial stone and ceramics industry.

From planning to commissioning​

For us, automation means reducing manual intervention in production so that highly qualified specialists can focus on the core business of the respective company. We achieve the increased degree of automation by linking different machines via logistics and transport systems and by combining previous individual machines into combined machine concepts. We have the know-how for the optimal material flow and integrate automatic storage systems for raw panels and buffer storage. Our specialists will accompany you from project planning to commissioning.

The optimal solution in focus

In the future, automation will be essential for companies of all sizes. With our large production lines, manual intervention is already no longer taking place. This means that the workpiece passes through all machining steps (saw, waterjet, machining center) fully automatically, without any manual intervention. However, automation is also becoming increasingly important for small and medium-sized companies. Especially in times of a shortage of skilled workers, every company must strive to use its employees profitably and to relieve them of unnecessary or unpleasant tasks. Here we also offer suitable solutions for small and medium-sized companies. Our modular machine concept allows step-by-step expansion without losing the investments made up to now.

Automation and software​

The advanced level of automation is also reflected in the software. We use the same interface on all our machines, so that operators can be used across machines. The production process is typically controlled centrally via a higher-level production planning system. By using workpiece images and clear workpiece identification using barcodes, customer-specific orders can be individually manufactured and the end product can be simulated in advance. For more complex work, the machining process can be simulated in advance. We will be happy to advise you on the best solution for your company.

References production plants

The system shown covers the entire production process for kitchen worktops. At the beginning there is a material intake with a portal manipulator for material testing and storage in the high-bay warehouse. Starting from the high-bay warehouse, the sawing system is automatically loaded. From there, the workpieces are automatically removed and transported to the edge grinding machines and CNC machines. In a second production cell, ceramic plates are processed in parallel on a water jet cutting machine. Here, too, loading and unloading takes place automatically using shuttle tables.

The system shown for kitchen countertops has already been successfully implemented in practice. Starting from an automatic panel storage, the cutting of the work piece is done through saw and waterjet. The ready-cut workpieces are stored temporarily in a buffer storage. Subsequently, the finishing of the workpiece takes place on turntable CNC machining centers. The loading and unloading as well as the suction cup positioning are done without manual intervention.

Automation by machine type

Our modern 5-axis saws are equipped with a vacuum device for separating workpieces. By adding additional foldable suction cups and a rotation axis, raw slabs can be collected and processed directly from the stationary A-frame.

Our specially developed saw band typically serves as a cutting base, which enables automatic removal of the workpieces after the end of the machining process. Alternatively, the machine can be equipped with an automatic table change using a scissor lifting system. This solution is particularly suitable for sensitive materials.

Our water jet machines can be equipped with an interchangeable frame system that allows for the automatic loading and unloading of the machine. It comes with two worktables that can be automatically swapped, thereby allowing the machine to continue working on a worktable while loading and unloading take place outside the processing area. This increases the effective running time of the machine by up to 100%. Loading and unloading take place fully automatically via a manipulator that is integrated into the production process.

A key aspect of automation is the linking of previously separate individual machines to form an integrated production solution. Our CSA 598 does precisely that by combining automatic loading from the A-frame with automatic water jet machining and sawing. No manual intervention or manual transport of material is required throughout the entire process. The automation with two processing bridges results in significantly shorter processing time and a constantly high quality. Alternatively, the combination in one processing bridge allows for a very compact design.

Up to now it was necessary for the operator at the machining center to position the suction cups manually before each machining operation. Thanks to our new development, the suction cups are positioned fully automatically by the machine based on the existing workpiece and processing data. The globally unique automatic positioning of the suction cups not only minimizes the set-up times of the machine, but also allows automatic loading and unloading of the machining center using a manipulator.

Burkhardt-Löffler offers fully automated solutions for the processing of all workpiece edges.
